6/26/25 Padres Linked to 2 Outfielders in Potential Blockbuster Trade Deadline Moves. The San Diego Padres will be on the hunt for a left fielder in the trade market after officially releasing Jason Heyward. After losing 2024 NL All-Star and Silver Slugger Jurickson Profar to free agency over the offseason, the Padres signed Heyward to a one-year deal in February. The Padres were hoping for improvement after his rehab assignment in mid-June but ultimately elected to move on from him instead.

6/22/25 Former Atlanta Braves All-Star Outfielder DFA'd By Padres. The San Diego Padres announced on Saturday that they have designated Atlanta Braves all-star outfielder Jason Heyward for assignment. Heyward signed with the Padres over the offseason to a one-year, $1 million contract that came with incentives based on the number of plate appearances he had with the team. The first $50,000 bonus would have kicked in at 200 plate appearances, and he had 95. In those 95 plate appearances, Heyward had a .176 batting average with a .494 OPS.

6/21/25 Padres DFA Jason Heyward, Activate Star Reliever In Surprise Roster Move. The San Diego Padres have designated veteran outfielder Jason Heyward for assignment ahead of Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The Friars activated reliever Bryan Hoeing off the 60-day injured list, and in a corresponding move, optioned right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds to Triple-A El Paso. Heyward was the Padres' starting left fielder at the start of the season, but struggled as he posted a .494 OPS.

6/17/25 Padres Injured Outfielder May Not Return to Team This Season. Jason Heyward will need to improve his performance at the plate if he wants to stay part of the San Diego Padres. The Padres signed Heyward as a free agent to a one-year deal in February. The left fielder's batting has been the worst of his 16-season MLB career. Heyward is hitting a career-low .176 and posting a career-low .494 OPS in 34 games this season.

6/13/25 Padres predicted to show interest in $50 million 38 home run slugger. After a solid start to the season, the San Diego Padres sit just two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West division lead. For the Padres, while things are going well from top to bottom on the roster, there is one clear issue that needs to be resolved by the MLB trade deadline: left field. With Jason Heyward going down with an injury, and their rotation of Tyler Wade, Brandon Lockridge, Jose Iglesias, and Gavin Sheets not panning out, there is a clear hole in left.

6/12/25 Padres Injured Outfielder Taking Major Step Toward Return. Jason Heyward's timetable to return to the Padres just gained a little clarity. The veteran outfielder will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A El Paso, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Heyward's next game will be his first since May 23, when he suffered a left oblique strain. Acee suggested it's not unimaginable that his time with the Padres would already be over if not for the injury.

6/08/25 Remembering Washington Nationals Star Stephen Strasburg's Electrifying Debut. On June 8, 2010, the Washington Nationals were the talk of the baseball world despite owning a record of 29-31. The conditions were perfect, a summer night in the team's then brand-new ballpark and a raucous crowd against a 23-36 Pittsburgh Pirates team. According to MLB.com's preseason rankings, Strasburg was the No. 2 prospect in the sport entering that season, behind only outfielder Jason Heyward. Just about a year prior, the Nationals made Strasburg the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft out of San Diego State.

6/07/25 Padres Insider Says Friars 'Must' Make One Specific Trade. As July's MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres' urgency to plug holes on their roster increases, especially at one glaring positional need. The left field position for the Padres is one of the worst in the league. Jason Heyward, Brandon Lockridge, and Tyler Wade are the current platoon, though due to Heyward's injury, Gavin Sheets has been filling in at times.

5/29/25 Padres trade idea replaces Jason Heyward with $56 million All-Star. The San Diego Padres may be in the market for an outfielder near the trade deadline. Jason Heyward had been the primary left fielder for the Padres this year. CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson tabbed Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles as a potential fit for the team near the trade deadline.

5/27/25 Padres Insider Provides Update on San Diego's Search for Trade Upgrade. The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee reported the San Diego Padres are looking to get a new left fielder through trade after Jason Heyward's placement on the 10-day injured list. The Padres dealt Joe to the Reds May 9 for right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore and cash considerations, and released Gonzalez 10 days later.

5/26/25 Padres Already Trying to Make Trade to Upgrade Key Position. The San Diego Padres are already looking to upgrade a position of weakness on their roster, which has yielded underwhelming offensive production so far. The Padres have gotten very little from their left field platoon, with Jason Heyward struggling to get his bat going and Brandon Lockridge being more of a defensive piece on the roster. To make matters worse, Heyward is on the injured list with a left oblique strain, leaving the team with a makeshift rotation of Lockridge, Gavin Sheets and Tyler Wade playing out in left field.

5/25/25 San Diego Padres Seeking LF Help on Trade Market, Per Report. The San Diego Padres placed left fielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain on Saturday, opening the door for catcher Luis Campusano to rejoin the big league roster. Heyward, after all, was batting .176 with a .494 OPS and -0.6 WAR through 34 games, while Tirso Ornelas and Oscar González also had negative WARs before they were let go. Brandon Lockridge, designated hitter Gavin Sheets and utility man Tyler Wade are in line to share left field duties in Heyward's absence, as Jurickson Profar departed in free agency last winter after a breakout All-Star campaign.

5/22/25 Padres Aging Veteran Doesn't Know If This Will Be His Last MLB Opportunity. Jason Heyward realizes he's closer to the end of his career as a baseball player than the beginning. The Padres' outfielder, now in his 16th big league season, is hitting .176 with a .223 on-base percentage and a .271 slugging percentage in a platoon/bench role. Signed to provide the left-handed half of a left field tandem, Heyward has already seen the right-handed half of the platoon — Connor Joe — leave San Diego via trade. Wednesday, Heyward reflected candidly on his shelf life in a game that favors the young and agile.
