Miller underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017. 7/17/25	Diamondbacks Closer Avoids Disaster in Latest Injury Update. Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave health updates Thursday evening during the team's voluntary workouts. The biggest news to come out of the press conference was that closer Shelby Miller will avoid surgery and has begun a throwing program. Miller went on the injured list on retroactive to July 6 with a flexor tendon strain in his right arm. On Friday, manager Torey Lovullo revealed that interim closer Shelby Miller will be receiving a second opinion on his right forearm strain from Dr. Keith Meister, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. Miller went on the 15-day Injured List on July 7 with his diagnosed right forearm strain, the latest in an agonizing stretch of injuries to the Diamondbacks' roster. When the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Shelby Miller to a minor league contract with opt-outs, there didn't seem to be an immediate pathway for him to make the major league roster. Miller came into camp confident that he had a good chance to make the roster and wouldn't need to use the opt-outs.
