7/29/25 As Red Sox await news on two key injured players; Justin Slaten takes 'good first step'. The Red Sox remain in fact-finding mode when it comes to two key injured players who are not with the club on its quick road trip to Minneapolis. Manager Alex Cora didn't have much in the way of updates on starter Tanner Houck (right flexor pronator strain) or Marcelo Mayer (right wrist sprain) but indications are that neither player is close to rejoining the major league roster. Both Houck and Mayer continue to seek opinions and get tests on their respective injuries, with Boston hoping to know more by the time the team returns home to face the Astros this weekend. “With both cases, the more information we get during the week, the more clear we'll be on the weekend,” said Cora.

Boston will not push things with the 27-year-old, especially considering they've

Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten, who has been on the injured list since June 1 with right shoulder inflammation, has begun playing catch again. Slaten played catch on June 27 but the Red Sox halted his throwing progression at that point and limited him to plyo work in the gym “to get his strength back.” “Just playing catch but that's a big step,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston's game against the Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

On the day the Red Sox placed Slaten on the IL, he said he was dealing with “a little bit of fatigue” and he didn't think the injury “anything super serious.”
