. “It's showing me that my body is working well down the mound, for sure,” Giolito said. “I'm not out there trying to throw really hard but it's coming out pretty good. So I just want to continue on that track and continue to trust the work that we put in each day to prepare. Rafael Devers (3B - BOS)
2/25/24 4:13 PM - Why Rafael Devers' first spring HR was particularly encouraging for Red Sox, Alex Cora
. Rafael Devers' first home run of spring training was encouraging not just because of how it left JetBlue Park — but also because of where exactly it traveled out. Devers' blast was a three-run, opposite-field no-doubter off Twins minor leaguer John Stankiewicz that easily cleared the faux Green Monster in left field. For Devers, who relied on pull-side power and got away from driving the ball the other way in 2023, the swing was telling for late February, even if it came on a middle-middle fastball from someone who has never pitched above High-A.
Carlos Carrasco (P - CLE)
2/25/24 3:59 PM - Carlos Carrasco overcomes nerves in return to Guardians
. Veterans usually know what their role will be in the regular season before they arrive at their team's spring training site. Carrasco is with the Guardians in Goodyear, Ariz., on a non-roster invitation after signing a minor-league contract on Feb. 1 — 11 days before pitchers and catchers were due to report to spring training. Gimenez has been the Guardians' starting second baseman the majority of the time since the trade was made.

. Tigers rookie Justyn-Henry Malloy's sharp eye has preceded him to the big leagues. Former Tigers shortstop Zack Short, now with the Mets, called Malloy the human ABS (automated balls and strikes system). “If he takes a pitch, it's a ball,” Short said. The Tigers dugout started hooting and hollering on Saturday when Malloy took a borderline pitch that was called a strike, making sure the umpire knew who he was dealing with in there.

2/25/24 3:12 PM - Twins erase six-run deficit before losing first Grapefruit League game of spring
. FORT MYERS, FLA. — Twins starter Bailey Ober struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches Sunday, and he felt as if he could have overpowered hitters if he kept throwing fastballs all afternoon at JetBlue Park. Fortunately for the Boston Red Sox, Ober had other pitches he wanted to work on, too. Three consecutive Red Sox batters reached base against Ober with one out in the second ...

In his first plate appearance since being reacquired by the M's in January, Haniger ripped a solo home run to left field in the team's Cactus League home opener Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians in Peoria, Ariz. As Haniger stepped into the box, he was greeted by a nice ovation from the crowd at the Peoria Sports Complex. Always a fan favorite with the M's, Haniger then really gave them something to cheer about, just like he's done 107 times before in regular season games in Seattle's blue and Northwest green.

Bryan Mata (P - BOS)
2/25/24 1:34 PM - Red Sox pitcher Bryan Mata sidelined with hamstring strain
. Righthander Bryan Mata will be sidelined for an undetermined period after straining his right hamstring. Mata, who has faced numerous injuries during his minor-league career, arrived at camp without options, meaning he must earn a spot on the Sox' parent club otherwise the team would be forced to designate him for assignment. Justin Slaten, who the Sox acquired from the Mets during the offseason, is in the same predicament, making it a two-man battle between the pair of righthanders for a roster spot. The uphill battle for both just became tougher for Mata, who was once a promising young prospect in the Red Sox' system.

Ryan Noda (1B - OAK)
2/25/24 1:29 PM - [NBC Sports Bay Area] - Why Noda could be intriguing A's leadoff-hitter option in 2024
. In his rookie year, Ryan Noda was a bright spot during the Athetics’ lowly 2023 MLB season. Mainly batting in the top third of Oakland’s lineup, the 27-year-old flashed a strong ability to get on base, boasting a .364 OBS. On Thursday, explained why Noda would make an enticing leadoff batter option as he enters his second “The left-handed hitter slashed .229/.364/.406 in 2023, but his 77 walks led all MLB rookies and his .770 OPS ranked ninth among rookies with at least 400 at-bats,” wrote Stockmar. “Go ahead and add Noda’s 22 doubles and 16 home runs to the totals, and the dude knows how to get on base. “Most of Noda’s action came while batting second in the order, but he did bat leadoff in 21 of his starts as a rookie with a healthy .776 OPS in the top spot. That knack for finding a way on base could see him batting leadoff more in 2024.” Noda finished his inaugural campaign third in hits (93) and RBIs (54) for Oakland. But with three stolen bases across 128 games last season and speed that doesn’t rival teammate Esteury Ruiz (67 stolen bases in 2023), Noda might not be the most conventional leadoff batter. However, A’s manager Mark Kotsay suggested that he won’t treat speed as the most significant quality when deciding who will hold the No.1 spot in his lineup. “It can play into that, definitely,” Kotsay said Thursday. “I don’t think that the leadoff spot has to be a guy that has speed. [Noda’s] definitely a guy you want to get on base as much as possible. We’ll look at that as an option.” Recognizing what he can do on the diamond, Kotsay added that Noda wasn’t at his best last season, carrying untapped potential into the 2024 MLB season. While the A’s are figuring out where , one thing is for certain: Noda and contribute as much as possible, especially after last season’s overall outcomes. “I’ve got to keep getting better,” Noda said Thursday. “My whole thing is we just want to win. Last year we didn’t win a lot, and for me, I think it was just a failure. We all know it. We all worked this offseason. We all kept tabs on each other to make sure we’re all doing the same work, getting in the gym, getting in the cage, working on the right things.” Noda, like Kotsay, is hopeful for leaps in personal and team success.
Martin Maldonado (C - CHW)
2/25/24 12:38 PM - White Sox' Martin Maldonado owns up to not running hard on Cactus League ground ball
. With so much emphasis on playing the game “the right way,” and doing the little things, not to mention play FAST, which in White Sox manager Pedro Grifol's world means “fearless, aggressive, selfless, technical,” seeing 37-year-old catcher Martin Maldonado not run hard on a dribbler near the mound made Grifol squirm just a bit. Maldonado was brought to the Sox at age 37 to not only handle the pitching staff but to lead a group none-too-deep with talent as Grifol and general manager Chris Getz re-establish a foundation with which to build. Granted, it was the first game of a somewhat meaningless Cactus League game Friday.

When asked about it, the Astros star didn't sound too confident that he'll be ready to go, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

2/25/24 12:00 PM - 4 infielders fighting to be next man up for Tigers
. The Detroit Tigers parted ways with infielders Nick Maton and Tyler Nevin; moved Justyn-Henry Malloy to the outfield on a full-time basis; and declared a fairly open competition for the final bench spot leading up to spring training. All that seemed like great news for the four Tigers' infielders on the 40-man roster who would be otherwise slated for a return engagement at Triple-A Toledo: Ryan Kreidler, Andre Lipcius, Wenceel Perez and Eddys Leonard.
