Now, they have to be absolutely perfect to defeat the Boston Red Sox and stay towards the top. While the Yankees were able to move past another division foe, the Tampa Bay Rays, in their last two games, not everything went according to plan. 8/10/25	Yankees New Closer is Crystal Clear. David Bednar hasn't even been on the team for two weeks, and he's already the fan favorite for the New York Yankees' closer role. In last night's game against the Houston Astros, Bednar rescued the Yankees again with a five-out save bolstered by Trent Grisham's game-winning homer. The Cleveland Guardians are just .5 games behind the Yankees for the last AL Wild Card spot, and every game feels critical. Bednar is putting in a "dawg effort" (in the words of Yankees manager Aaron Boone) to help the team crawl out of the hole they've dug themselves since June. The New York Yankees added a reliever from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who before the trade, was known as a hometown hero for the black and gold. David Bednar, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, made his way to the Pirates in 2021 and brought a hometown song to his walk out. As the Pirates prepared for Bednar to take the mound, closing out games at PNC Park, a familiar song for the city would be begin to play. They achieved that goal by trading for closers David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants. Also, New York traded for Colorado Rockies middle reliever Jake Bird. Despite the additions, the Yankees continue to shoot themselves in the foot with poor performances by their bullpen. In the midst of their pitching moves was a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, acquiring David Bednar in exchange for catcher Rafael Flores, their No. 8 prospect, and first baseman Edgleen Perez, their No. 14 prospect.
