The St. Louis Cardinals have been able to do what most other major league teams have not: beat Pirates ace Paul Skenes consistently. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner fell to 0-5 all-time against the Cardinals when he took the loss in a 10-5 defeat that gave St. Louis a four-game sweep of the early-season series at PNC Park. Skenes' ERA against St. Louis is a more than respectable 2.95, but Pirates manager Don Kelly noted the Cardinals are more focused on swinging away than trying to work the count against Skenes. Pittsburgh's fifth straight loss dropped the Pirates to 16-16 as May begins.

New York is a major league-worst 10-21. The team's .323 winning percentage through April is its fourth-lowest behind poor starts in 1962, 1964 and 1981. The Mets are 27th among the 30 major league teams with a .227 batting average, 29th with 106 runs and 30th with a .631 OPS.
