The free agency and trade maneuvers by Bears GM Ryan Poles have probably made it easier on the team for the draft as he can select the highest rated player and not for a particular need. With every single starting position covered now by an experienced, quality NFL player after the initial rush of free ageny, there is no need for a rookie to come in and start immediately. The Bears had huge expectations for running back D'Andre Swift when they signed him in the opening hour of free agency last year, and while he was a big-play threat, he had one of the least productive seasons of his career. Amid the Bears' many problems on offense, including floundering coordinator Shane Waldron and a struggling offensive line, Swift ran for 959 yards and six touchdowns and caught 42 passes for 386 yards after signing a three-year, $24 million contract. The Bears were one of those teams who valued a free agent running backs last year more than in recent years, when they gave D'Andre Swift a three-year, $24 million contract. The other top ones available then included Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry.
