With February drawing to a close, the Houston Astros received positive injury updates on two key pitchers last week. One update was on right-handed starter Luis Garcia, who missed most of 2023 and all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. Garcia has not pitched in nearly two years, but the Astros are hoping he can contribute in 2025.

1/08/25 Pitcher Luis Garcia agrees to $1,875,000 deal with Astros as he returns from Tommy John surgery. Right-hander Luis Garcia and the Houston Astros avoided arbitration when they agreed to a one-year contract for $1,875,000, matching the salary he earned last year when he didn't pitch in the major leagues as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old Garcia had surgery on May 19, 2023, and made a pair of minor league appearances last year, on June 28 and July 4, but was slow to bounce back. Garcia is 28-19 with a 3.61 ERA in 63 starts and six relief appearances from 2020-23. Seven Astros remained set to exchange proposed arbitration salaries with the team Thursday: right-hander Bryan Abreu, left-hander Framber Valdez, shortstop Jeremy Peña, third baseman Isaac Paredes and outfielders Mauricio Dubón, Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers.

8/03/24 Houston Astros Cancel Rehab Assignment as Starter Faces Another Setback. The Houston Astros pitching staff has faced unforeseen injury problems with their starting rotation and don't seem to be getting any luckier. Unfortunate news came out of the Astros camp on Friday afternoon as insider Chandler Rome of The Athletic shared the news that right-handed pitcher Luis Garcia was dealing with elbow soreness. It was so bad, in fact, that the team cancelled his upcoming rehab assignment. Garcia was a key part of the Houston rotation to start his career and it looked like he was set to become an ace.

7/23/24 Two Key Houston Astros Pitchers Continue Injury Rehab Work. Injured Houston Astros pitcher Luis Garcia threw 31 pitches in a bullpen session at Minute Maid Park on Monday, one of two injured starters the team is keeping tabs on in the hope that one or more can return soon. The other is Justin Verlander. Another starter, Lance McCullers Jr., is no closer to resuming throwing. Garcia was top of mind as manager Joe Espada told local media that the right-hander got as high as 91 mph on the radar gun during the session.

7/21/24 Could Houston Astros Pursue an Ace Made Available by Toronto Blue Jays?. The Houston Astros have authored the best turnaround in baseball this season. After sitting last place in the AL West earlier in the year and looking like potential sell candidates, they have now fought their way into first place and are playing like a team who has dominated the American League during their dynastic run. There isn't a whole lot that general manager Dana Brown has to add, but one thing the Astros certainly need is another starting pitcher even with Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. expected to return at some point this season. Who they might go after isn't known, but following Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy and J.P. France all undergoing surgeries to end their years, they likely will target someone who isn't a rental and will be in the mix next season.

6/27/24 Another Astros starter to undergo surgery. France resumed throwing recently after being shut down for about a month, but had a setback this week leading to the decision to have surgery. The Astros opened the year without Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers because of injuries and José Urquidy and Cristian Javier both had Tommy John surgery earlier this month before ace Justin Verlander landed on the 15-day injured list with neck discomfort.
