| 8/11/23 | After Further Review: Breaking Down the Patriots Offense, Defense and Rookies in Preseason Opener. As Strong follows the blocks, the second level of the Texans defense flies to the puller. With Strong's speed and the defensive back covering Tre Nixon on the screen filling late, the Pats running back might've been running for a while if he hits that cutback lane. The RPOs will open rushing lanes because defensive backs who might have run-game responsibilities have to play pass, but the running backs need to show better vision and patience. The true competition and evaluation, the Patriots head coach says, don't start until training camp begins in late July. So, any declaration that a player solidified his roster spot in organized team activities and minicamp is premature. The list of New England players who flashed in the spring only to fade in the summer is long, with wide receivers Tre Nixon (2022) and Maurice Harris (2019) standing out as two recent examples. But that doesn't mean spring practices are useless.
