8/25/25 Red Sox' waivers pickup has been a grand slam with some amazing stats in short time with team. The Boston Red Sox had a big question mark at first base all this season due to the Triston Casas injury, but now they have the answer. The Sox signed Nathaniel Lowe off of waivers one week ago, and he has been a grand slam for them, no pun intended. Before Lowe, the Sox were using Triston Casas, Abraham Toro, and Romy Gonzalez at first base, but all of them have had their failings.

8/24/25 Red Sox Predicted To Cut Ties With Gold Glover After Short Boston Stint. The most recent signing for the Boston Red Sox could also be the first one shown the door this winter. Boston desperately needed a first baseman all season, after Triston Casas tore his patellar tendon and Rafael Devers publicly refused to take reps at the position. In a stroke of good luck, former World Series champion Nathaniel Lowe became available for the league minimum in August. Lowe has been good so far, with a 5-for-14 start, including a clutch home run.

8/16/25 Red Sox Could Soon Pick Up Former Silver Slugger, World Series Champ: Report. Are the Boston Red Sox going to bring in a World Series champion first baseman? First base has been a never-ending saga for the Red Sox all season, beginning with Triston Casas' devastating injury, continuing with Rafael Devers' very public refusal to learn the position (and subsequent trade), and finally being somewhat stabilized by the platoon of Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez.

8/14/25 Red Sox predicted to possibly acquire recently DFA'd Gold Glove, Silver Slugger to replace Abraham Toro. The Boston Red Sox have been having trouble at first base for a while now, as their main man Triston Casas has been very injury prone, missing most of last season and will miss most of this season. Abraham Toro has been a good sub, but his numbers recently are abysmal, and the Sox need a change. Red Sox analyst Tyler Milliken believes that the Sox might sign Nathaniel Lowe, a first baseman who was recently designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals.

8/05/25 Red Sox Star Breaks Silence; Takes Subtle Shot At Boston. The Boston Red Sox have been bitten by the injury bug all season. Most of the headlines of the season have belonged to guys like Triston Casas, Tanner Houck, or Alex Bregman, but they aren't the only guys who have suffered long-term injuries. Another guy who has been out is Liam Hendriks. Hendriks hasn't pitched in a game since May 27th.

7/28/25 Red Sox Could 'Dive Into' Trade Sweepstakes For 36-HR Slugger, Per Insider. The Boston Red Sox still could use one more big bat at the trade deadline, and that bat had better be able to play first base. It's been the ongoing saga of the season in Boston - Triston Casas' injury, Rafael Devers refusing to take over at first base, and the subsequent Devers blockbuster.

7/27/25 Red Sox's Top 1st Base Trade Target Becoming Crystal Clear. The Boston Red Sox's need at first base has been the story of the season, and the trade deadline is their last chance to address it. By Thursday, the Red Sox will have to find a replacement for the injured Triston Casas once and for all. The Tampa Bay Rays' losing streak has created another prospective option: Yandy Díaz, who is under team control for 2026 as well on a relatively cheap club option.

7/25/25 MLB Trade Rumors: Red Sox Expected To Address This Position Before Deadline. Most trade talks link the Boston Red Sox with pitching before next Thursday's MLB trade deadline. Buster Olney discussed Boston's deadline plans with Boston Globe reporters Alex Speier and Peter Abraham on NESN's “310 To Left” podcast. The ESPN insider said Friday that there's an “assumption” around the league that the Red Sox will acquire a first baseman. Triston Casas underwent season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured left patellar tendon in early May. Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez have predominantly handled first-base reps ever since.

7/24/25 Red Sox predicted to make big trade for $100M All-Star first baseman. The Boston Red Sox came into the season expecting big things from Triston Casas. However, he struggled and eventually suffered a season-ending knee injury.

7/23/25 Insider speculates Red Sox could replace Triston Casas with long-term deadline move. The Boston Red Sox have had quite a bit of turnover at first base this season. The club expected Triston Casas to be its everyday starter, but a ruptured patellar tendon ended his season prematurely, and possibly delayed his next one. Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have been good-to-great replacements in the lineup, but neither is a full-time first baseman, nor do they offer a long-term solution at the corner. After the Red Sox entered the All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak, they firmly established themselves as buyers, and a first baseman could be on their radar.

7/21/25 Red Sox could use upgrade at first base, but Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez have been complementing each other. Toro — evidently opposed to a Cubist dissolution of the self — offered a less violent portrait. “We complete each other,” Toro said of his first base partnership with Gonzalez. Since the Triston Casas injury, Sox first basemen have offered stability, with a combined .265/.307/.419 line overall — respectable, middle-of-the-pack production. Most of the impact has come courtesy of Gonzalez, whose self-described “extremely locked in” status has been both the stuff of T-shirts among his teammates and tremendous contributions.

7/17/25 Rays first baseman would be ‘high’ on the Red Sox’s wish list should he be made available. When Triston Casas went down with a serious injury, the Boston Red Sox were left scrambling for answers at first […]

7/16/25 Potential Red Sox Trade Target Addresses Deadline Rumors. The Boston Red Sox are just over two weeks away from Major League Baseball's trade deadline, and all signs point to the team being buyers when the dust finally settles on July 31. Entering the All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak and sitting three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East, the Red Sox have developed a couple of glaring needs after injuries to Triston Casas and Hunter Dobbins created major holes on the team's roster. Baltimore Orioles first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn is a name the Red Sox have been connected to since Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury in May. Named to the AL All-Star team this season, O'Hearn is in the midst of a career season while the Orioles have taken a major step back following a disappointing 43-52 start in 2025.

7/11/25 Red Sox-Diamondbacks Blockbuster Is 'Logical' Possibility, Per Insider. The Red Sox are on a heater these days. Ever since Triston Casas got hurt, the first base position has been a highly publicized question mark for the Red Sox, though Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez have done an admirable job stabilizing things. It's fine for Gonzalez to keep getting at-bats against left-handed pitching, but Toro has predictably leveled off of late. It would be sensible for the Red Sox to pursue a rental left-handed bat at first base to fill the void until Casas hypothetically returns in 2026.

7/07/25 Red Sox Reportedly Have Harsh Triston Casas Feelings Despite Injury. The Boston Red Sox are reportedly looking to find a long-term replacement for first baseman Triston Casas.

7/06/25 Red Sox Trade Buzz: Guardians Veteran All-Star Called 'Nice Fit'. The Boston Red Sox have been plagued by questions at first base ever since Triston Casas went down. In searching for answers to these questions, Boston has hurt itself on multiple occasions. The Rafael Devers idea went awry, of course. Kristian Campbell began taking practice reps at first, which may have overwhelmed the 23-year-old rising star.

7/03/25 Red Sox Make Intriguing Masataka Yoshida Decision As Season Debut Nears. Ever since Triston Casas tore his patellar tendon on May 2, the first base position has been up in the air. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow asked Rafael Devers to learn the job, and the request offended him so much that it eventually led to his trade to the San Francisco Giants. Highly regarded rookie Kristian Campbell has also taken grounders at first for weeks on end, debuting there in the minor leagues, but not yet in the majors.

7/02/25 Unlikely Red Sox Candidate Taking Reps At First Base. When Triston Casas was ruled out for the season, it left the Boston Red Sox with a sizeable hole at first base. While Casas hadn't performed as well as he hoped, his previous performance suggested he'd be an above-average contributor to the lineup in time. Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez have been the primary replacements for Casas, and they've performed well. Since the injury, Red Sox first basemen have a 102 wRC+, just above league average.

6/26/25 Red Sox could target $10.9 million D-Backs All-Star to boost lineup. The Boston Red Sox are currently struggling. If Boston wants to buy, there are plenty of areas on the roster that need work. First base is one of them with Triston Casas out for the year. Cody Williams of FanSided proposed the idea of trading for former All-Star Josh Naylor.
