Everything immediately went sideways for the Orioles right out of the gate, with both the offense and pitching staff falling woefully short of some rather lofty expectations. This abysmal start culminated with the team deciding to fire longtime manager Brandon Hyde after just 43 games, leaving third base coach Tony Mansolino with the duty of trying to get things back on track. The Baltimore Orioles have been playing better baseball of late, but it feels like it is too little, too late for them to make the playoffs. In a deep hole from their abysmal play earlier in the season, interim manager Tony Mansolino has his squad playing at a higher level than they did under Brandon Hyde, but there is a lot of ground to be made up. Entering play on June 23, they are still in last place in the American League East, 12 games behind the New York Yankees, who won two out of three against the Orioles in a series this past weekend. 6.5 games back from the final wild card spot, Baltimore would have to jump six teams in the standings before even reaching the Cleveland Guardians in that final position. After feeling pain during batting practice, trainer Scott Barringer recommended Rutschman should be scratched. “During (batting practice), it flared up,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said after Baltimore's 5-3 win. Rutschman was scratched from Tony Mansolino's lineup with abdominal tightness. Tyler O'Neill and Jorge Mateo, on the other hand, are rehabbing more serious injuries. The Baltimore Orioles are not exactly on a hot streak currently, but they certainly look better now than they did at the start of the season. Under interim manager Tony Mansolino, the team has found a bit of a stride as of late, and it is largely due in part to their winter additions improving their performances. In a recent post from Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun, he detailed some of the stats over the course of the last month for each free agency signing. Charlie Morton has made four starts, picking up a 3-0 record, allowing six earned runs in 20.0 innings pitched (2.70 ERA), 27 strikeouts, eight walks and only one home run allowed. Two days ago, Tony Mansolino drew the ire of some Orioles fans when he said that he was encouraged by aspects of his lineup's performance against Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The interim manager said that better performances against left-handed pitchers were coming, mostly because he had faith in his right-handed hitters. It didn't happen the way Mansolino likely envisioned, but the Orioles' breakout showing against a southpaw finally happened. The Baltimore Orioles have had a tough go of things to start off their 2025 season, currently holding a 26-38 record, which lands them at the bottom of the American League East. It seems as though their slow start to the season is something that may be reparable, and under the tutelage of new manager Tony Mansolino, maybe they can even begin to compete again. This success that the team has been able to find is heavily reliant on individual performances starting to rapidly improve, but one player who has been steady all year long is reliever Bryan Baker. While he has not seen an exceptional amount of playing time yet for a reliever, he has done just about everything that could be asked of him in that span, which is all the team needs to improve. Near the top of his to-do list during those first two days was to call Jackson Holliday into his office. “J, you're going to play every day,” Mansolino told the 21-year-old.
