5/26/25 Ex-Red Sox Catcher Accomplishes Feat In 1st Game With Cubs He Never Did In Boston. Boston Red Sox fans who either tuned into the Chicago Cubs' game on Sunday or checked the box scores later likely couldn't believe their eyes. The Cubs needed a new catcher ahead of their series finale with the Cincinnati Reds, so they recalled one from Triple-A. That catcher was Reese McGuire, who spent parts of three seasons with the Boston Red Sox before he was designated for assignment last season and later elected free agency. McGuire was once a first-round pick, but he's become a journeyman at this stage of his career.

5/25/25 Reese McGuire hits home run in first at-bat for Cubs after being called up. Reese McGuire added another milestone to what has been a hectic 10 days. McGuire hit a home run in his first at-bat for the Chicago Cubs during the second inning of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The 30-year-old catcher was brought up from Triple-A Iowa and added to the 40-man roster after Miguel Amaya was placed on the injured list with a left oblique strain.

1/22/25 Former Red Sox Catcher Reportedly Lands With NL Central Club. Reese McGuire spanned across parts of three seasons as the backup catcher for the Boston Red Sox. Now, he's reportedly found his next professional home. McGuire reportedly signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, per Just Baseball's Aram Leighton . The catcher joins his fourth MLB franchise after the Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. The 2013 first-round draft pick slashed .264/.315/.370 for a .686 OPS in 161 career games for the Red Sox. Boston designated McGuire for assignment last summer after their rental acquisition of Danny Jansen at the trade deadline from the Blue Jays. Boston now enters the season with Connor Wong and Carlos Narvaez as the backstop tandem
