5/18/24 Two reasons why Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire is back to being one of MLB's best at throwing out runners. “You only have a chance as much as the pitcher gives you as far as time to the plate,” McGuire said prior to Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Cardinals. Last season's implementation of MLB's rule limiting pitchers to a maximum of three pickoff attempts per plate appearance was an adjustment for the Sox pitchers. Pitchers had to key in more to their patterns, ensuring they were mixing up their tempo and speed on the mound. Other times, pitchers would slow the pace and hold the ball longer when they came set.
4/18/24 Red Sox Catching Tandem Looking to Stay Hot. Red Sox catchers Reese McGuire and Connor Wong are looking to continue their excellent starts to the season. The Red Sox catchers rank 3rd among MLB catching batteries with a .324 batting average and are tied for first with 5 homers. Wong added to his hot start last night with a homer for the second consecutive night. In addition to the offense, he was behind the plate for pitcher Tanner Houck's complete game shutout.
4/12/24 Red Sox defensive gaffe, Reese McGuire's NSFW ejection spark Orioles comeback. The Boston Red Sox led the Baltimore Orioles in each of the three games they played at Fenway Park from April 9-11. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the score tied 3-3, Reese McGuire stared down Craig Kimbrel from the batter's box with a full count against him. Kimbrel fired a clear strike that nicked the right edge of the strike zone, and home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak called the catcher out looking. McGuire protested the call with some colorful language.
