9/25/24 | Astros could target former MVP to fill first base void this winter. The Houston Astros are once again the kings of the American League West. Jose Abreu didn't pan out, and Jon Singleton hasn't been any better. When the season comes to an end, there will be plenty of first base options available in free agency, including Texas native Paul Goldschmidt. With 16 games left in the regular season, it's looking like the Houston Astros will complete their comeback after they were last place in the AL West at one point this year. Once Houston gets in, they are a team nobody wants to face. Perhaps the biggest one is at first base. When Jose Abreu drastically underperformed to the point where the organization felt it was in everyone's best interest to cut him, that left a huge hole at that position that hasn't quite been filled. Former Chicago White Sox star and American League MVP Jose Abreu is not likely to play again in the majors this season, per a report from Cuban Baseball Insider Francys Romero. Abreu was released earlier this year by the Houston Astros. Jose Abreu will most likely not play in the remainder of the 2024 season, per sources.
