| 5/30/25 | Guardians acquire new 6-foot-4 pitcher after Ben Lively injury. The Cleveland Guardians were recently dealt a big blow with the season-ending injury of starting pitcher Ben Lively. They made a move Thursday to address their pitching depth. The Guardians claimed 6-foot-4 lefty Matt Krook off waivers from the Athletics. Krook was designated for assignment earlier in the week by the A's. The 30-year old signed with the Athletics this offseason on a minor league deal. In Triple-A Las Vegas this season, Krook had a 3.21 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 14 innings. Krook's biggest bugaboo is a career 15% walk rate in professional baseball. The Cleveland Guardians once again find themselves in need of more starting pitching, especially with Ben Lively undergoing season-ending surgery and Slade Cecconi dealing with mild tightness in his groin. To give themselves another option in the future, the Guardians optioned Joey Cantillo to Triple-A on Tuesday, with the sole purpose of stretching him to be a starter.
