2/11/25 Mets insider reveals major questions facing $75 million former All-Star. Though the Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed most of the headlines, the New York Mets have to be considered co-winners of the Major League Baseball offseason. They filled out their rotation with the signings of Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea and Clay Holmes, added A.J. Minter to an already strong bullpen, re-signed Pete Alonso on a team-friendly deal, and, oh yeah, signed superstar Juan Soto to the largest deal in MLB history. The Mets have vastly improved a team that came two wins away from the World Series in 2024 and look well-positioned for an National League East fight with the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. If the Mets have one clear weakness, however, it's the lack of a true ace. Holmes

1/27/25 Mets are making pitchers take notice with their transformational work. As Frankie Montas surveyed his options as a free agent, he gave his buddy and fellow free agent Sean Manaea a call. He had questions about the Mets and Jeremy Hefner. “How's the pitching coach? How's the training staff? How's everybody?” Montas asked his former rotation mate with the A's. “[Manaea] had nothing but good things to say about Jeremy,” Montas said this weekend at “Amazin' Day.” 5 Mets pitcher Frankie Montas (47) speaks at a media availability at Citi Field, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST In making an unexpected run to the NLCS last season, the Mets hope they have built a foundation for success year after year. With that foundation, they hope, comes a reputation.

1/14/25 Mets 1-for-1 blockbuster would bring $108 million Mariners All-Star to Queens. The New York Mets rotation has added Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes this offseason. SNY's Andy Martino revealed that Sasaki will not be joining the Mets. If the Mets want to add another starter who can lead their rotation, they could strike a deal with the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners are desperate for offensive talent and have a surplus of talented starters.

1/09/25 Mets could swing trade with Dodgers for All-Star starter as Clay Holmes insurance. The New York Mets have made additions to their rotation this offseason. They signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes but could need insurance for Holmes who is transitioning from the bullpen to a starting role. If the Mets' experiment with Holmes fails, he can still be a very good bullpen arm. However, the Mets will need an arm to replace him in their rotation. CBS Sports' Mike Axisa noted the Mets as a suitor for Los Angeles Dodgers Tony Gonsolin. "There would be no shortage of suitors for a good pitcher with two affordable years of control," wrote Axisa. "The Astros, Braves, Mets, Nationals, Orioles, Rangers, Royals, Tigers, and Twins all make sense." Gonsolin did not pitch in the big leagues

12/19/24 Mets Meet With Star Pitcher Roki Sasaki. The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes are underway - and the New York Mets have made their move. According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Mets and Sasaki completed a meeting on Thursday. The Mets, who have already signed free agent pitchers Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, and Griffin Canning, are one of many teams linked to the electric Japanese righty, and are among the favorites to land him. Sasaki, who has been posted after pitching four seasons with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), has a 45-day negotiation window and has between January 15 to January 23 to make a decision.

12/16/24 Ex-Mets GM Would be 'Shocked' if Pete Alonso Departs. A little less than two months after guiding the New York Mets to the NLCS in his first year as president of baseball operations, David Stearns handed out his three largest contracts with the club—Frankie Montas (two years, $34 million), Clay Holmes (three years, $38 million), and Juan Soto (15 years, $765 million)—all within the span of just eight days. The Mets' spending spree took a brief pause the following week, but big-name free agents continue to be linked to the club, which remains aggressive yet cautious in its approach. Homegrown star Pete Alonso leads the list of players still waiting to find a team, but his situation has progressed slowly thus far. While appearing on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" show on Monday, former Mets general manager Steve Phillips offered his insight into Alonso's future.

12/07/24 Mets Interested in Free Agent Postseason Hero. After adding Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to their rotation, the New York Mets are still in search of one more starter in free agency. On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the team remains interested in re-signing left-hander Sean Manaea. If the Mets pivot, Rosenthal identified Nathan Eovaldi, Jack Flaherty, Nick Pivetta, and Walker Buehler as potential alternatives.

12/04/24 Mets could lose $85 million two-time All-Star to Angels after strong 2024. The New York Mets have some holes to fill in their starting rotation. New York has already signed Frankie Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract, but they still need to fill the other two rotation spots.

The New York Mets have added Frankie Montas to their depleted rotation, agreeing to a $34 million, two-year contract with the veteran right-hander. A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the deal to the AP on Sunday night on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical. The 31-year-old Montas is slated to make $17 million in each year of the contract. Montas went 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 148 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings in 30 starts for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers this year.

11/10/24 Guardians Should Pursue This Former Ace In Free Agency. Everyone knows the Cleveland Guardians need more starting pitching to be considered a true World Series contender in 2025. One possible free-agent option for the Guardians is veteran pitcher Frankie Montas. Montas split his time between the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers during the 2024 season. The 31-year-old isn't nearly the same pitcher he was when he was the ace of the Oakland Athletics from 2019-21, and Montas has had a few injuries since then, too.
