7/11/25 Former MLB Exec Reveals Cost for Phillies To Land Ryan Helsley From Cardinals. The Philadelphia Phillies have a few areas they would love to shore up ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. Losing Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency last winter was always going to be a tough blow to overcome.

7/03/25 Phillies Can Solve Late-Inning Bullpen Woes Signing Veteran Free Agent. The Philadelphia Phillies have cemented their status as one of the best teams in baseball, but they do have one need that has to be addressed ahead of the MLB trade deadline: their bullpen. More specifically, a need for another relief pitcher who has late-inning and high-leverage experience. The Phillies lost Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency this past winter. Jose Alvarado will return down the stretch from an 80-game suspension, but he isn't eligible to pitch in the postseason when the team needs him most.

6/30/25 Phillies Mentioned As Potential Landing Spot for Orioles All-Star in Trade. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball once again during the 2025 MLB regular season. For the Phillies, their most pressing need seems to be on the mound, where their bullpen could use some reinforcements. The losses of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez have proven difficult to overcome. Add on Jose Alvarado being suspended, and the team is missing arguably their three best relievers from what was a strength last year.

6/27/25 Philadelphia Phillies Have Two Hitters Thriving in High-Leverage Situations. There has been a lot of discussion about what the Philadelphia Phillies are going to do ahead of the MLB trade deadline this year. The losses of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency were already proving hard enough to overcome; add in closer Jose Alvarado being suspended 80 games, and things got that much tougher. With center fielder Brandon Marsh getting back on track, the need to add a hitter has certainly diminished.

6/26/25 Blue Jays Star Reliever Jeff Hoffman Reaches Career Milestone. Jeff Hoffman is in his first season with the Toronto Blue Jays and is proving to be one of their best relievers in the bullpen. While this is his first year up north, he's in his 10th season in the Majors and just reached a career milestone: pitching in his 500th inning according to their official social media account. The only reliever with more strikeouts on the team is Brendon Little (52), who has thrown three more innings than Hoffman.

6/20/25 Blue Jays Farm System Has Two Rising Stars Despite Low Spot in Rankings. The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled in recent years to hit on their early draft picks. Starting pitcher Alex Manoah, selected in 2019, is the last player they selected to produce a positive bWAR in the Major Leagues. You have to go back to 2014, when they selected Jeff Hoffman, now their closer, to find the next player with a positive bWAR. Over at Bleacher Report, Joel Reuter believes they have one of the least impressive stable of minor league players and placed them at No. 23.

6/20/25 Philadelphia Phillies Can Address Bullpen Woes in Trade With Pirates at Deadline. The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the best teams in baseball throughout the 2025 regular season, but there are a few areas the team should be looking to upgrade ahead of the MLB trade deadline. There are concerns about their offensive production, especially in the outfield, where their center fielders are on pace to make some ugly franchise history. Losing Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency was going to be tough to overcome. Add to that Jose Alvarado being suspended for 80 games during the season and there just isn't enough in place to compensate.

6/19/25 Phillies Answer to Center Field Woes Is Knocking on Door of Major League Promotion. The Philadelphia Phillies have a few flaws on their roster that the front office would love to address ahead of the MLB trade deadline. It has been a struggle for manager Rob Thomson to find reliable arms throughout the season with several players struggling to find a groove. The losses of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez have been difficult to overcome. Add in closer Jose Alvarado, who was one of the few reliable options, currently serving an 80-game suspension and things are in disarray.

6/18/25 Phillies Add More Reliever Depth, Acquire Nolan Hoffman From Rangers. For the rest of the season, this Philadelphia Phillies bullpen is going to be under a microscope. Crumbling when it matters the most the past two years, the Phillies haven't addressed this area of their roster in the manner that many fans would have liked to see, letting Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez walk in free agency while adding Jordan Romano and Joe Ross as their backfills. Bullpen arms are going to be popular targets before the trade deadline, but Dave Dombrowski didn't wait until then to give this team another option.

6/16/25 Tigers Recent Waiver Claim for Relief Pitcher Cannot Be Only Bullpen Move Made. The Detroit Tigers' bullpen has become a bit of an issue over the last few weeks. Thus far this month, the relief staff has had a 4.98 ERA, which is the fifth-worst mark in the MLB. Looking to add some help, the Tigers claimed right-handed pitcher Carlos Hernandez from the Philadelphia Phillies, who was recently designated for assignment by the team. The Phillies had big plans for the veteran, expecting him to help offset their losses for Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez in free agency this past winter.

6/12/25 Glaring Phillies weakness has them atop trade deadline urgency index. It's no secret that the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen has drawn the ire of fans and media alike during the first 70 games of the 2025 Major League Baseball season. Of course, this is hardly the first time the Phillies bullpen has been identified as a weakness in the regular season. Throughout this successful era of Phillies baseball, the bullpen has gone through its ups and downs during the regular season, only for all the pieces to fall into place for manager Rob Thomson by the time October rolled around. The Phillies chose to let 2024 All-Star Jeff Hoffman walk in free agency, and while Hoffman has struggled in his first year with the Toronto Blue Jays, his replacement, two-time All-Star closer Jordan Romano, has been even worse, posting a 7.40 ERA and allowing over a hit per inning.

6/09/25 Hard Truth: Braves Offseason Bullpen Targets Weren't Answers. The Atlanta Braves bullpen has been struggling to plug its holes all season. For that reason, Atlanta Braves on SI decided to check in on some of the relievers the Braves reportedly looked into, were expected to target or former players who departed for other teams over the offseason. Maybe things would be going differently if they were in the Braves bullpen instead of elsewhere, but this is how they're doing with the current teams. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jeff Hoffman reportedly had a deal in place with the Braves but the team pulled the plug on it after a failed physical.

6/03/25 Phillies could acquire Rays flamethrower to boost bullpen, per ESPN insider. A bad postseason bullpen sank the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, and it's only gotten worse in the 2025 regular season. The Phillies let Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez walk in free agency, and now Jose Alvarado is suspended for 80 games and the postseason. The Phillies cannot depend on Orion Kerkering and Jordan Romano to lock down games in the ninth inning come September and October.

6/03/25 Reliever reunions in Toronto as Phillies' bullpen tries to figure it out. Seeing Jeff Hoffman this week in Toronto is a reminder of how much more late-inning bullpen depth the Phillies possessed last summer.

5/31/25 Phillies Named Best Trade Destination for Rays Star Relief Pitcher. The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the best teams in baseball this season, as they lead both the National League East and the entire NL. With one of the most well-rounded rosters in the game, it isn't too surprising to see the Phillies playing at such a high level. Philadelphia knew there could be a tough transition after losing Jeff Hoffman, an All-Star in 2024, and Carlos Estevez, the team's big trade deadline acquisition, in free agency to the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, respectively. The only addition the team made to the backend of their bullpen this past winter was Jordan Romano, who is beginning to find his form after a disastrous start to his tenure with the franchise.

5/27/25 Blue Jays manager sends Jeff Hoffman message as concerns mount. Jeff Hoffman was one of the Toronto Blue Jays' signature offseason acquisitions. Hoffman got off to a great start to the season, then abruptly started getitng shelled. No one would have expected Hoffman to own a 5.79 ERA two months into a $33 million contract. Before the Blue Jays' most recent game against the Texas Rangers, Toronto manager John Schneider addressed Hoffman's struggles, saying that the team still believes in the 2024 All-Star to be its closer.

5/23/25 Maybe picking Jordan Romano over Jeff Hoffman wasn't so bad for Phillies. About three weeks ago, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's decisions to not retain Jeff Hoffman and to replace the All Star reliever with former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano appeared to be an epic backfire. Hoffman, who signed a three-year, $33 million deal with Toronto, was one of MLB's top closers for the first five weeks of the season. The 32-year-old started off 3-0 with six saves and nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings, showing the filthy stuff Phillies fans saw in Hoffman's two years with the club, save for last year's postseason implosion.

5/19/25 Blue Jays Relief Pitcher Emerging at Perfect Time With Jeff Hoffman Struggling. The Toronto Blue Jays need a few breaks to go their way to start building some positive momentum and stick around in the playoff picture in the American League. One of the reasons that they started the year so hot was the performance of their bullpen, led by new closer Jeff Hoffman. Unfortunately, he has fallen on tough times recently, making the late-game situation for the Blue Jays shaky. Unfortunately for the team, Hoffman is not alone in his struggles.
