2/25/24 Why Rafael Devers' first spring HR was particularly encouraging for Red Sox, Alex Cora. Rafael Devers' first home run of spring training was encouraging not just because of how it left JetBlue Park — but also because of where exactly it traveled out. Devers' blast was a three-run, opposite-field no-doubter off Twins minor leaguer John Stankiewicz that easily cleared the faux Green Monster in left field. For Devers, who relied on pull-side power and got away from driving the ball the other way in 2023, the swing was telling for late February, even if it came on a middle-middle fastball from someone who has never pitched above High-A.
2/22/24 The Red Sox Should Sign Michael Lorenzen Before Someone Else Does. While by all accounts – including Rafael Devers' – the Boston Red Sox off-season has been a bust. A team that desperately needed pitching coming off of a last place finish in 2023, added Lucas Giolito and his home run propensity (he surrendered 41 last season to lead the league), and traded away Chris Sale and his injury propensity (UCL, rib, pinkie, wrist, shoulder, just to name a few). To be fair, the Red Sox did also sign Aussie reliever Liam Hendriks, who will not be available until after the All-Star break as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
2/21/24 Red Sox star Rafael Devers unloads on front office for not adding 'what we need' to win. The star third baseman, who signed a 10-year extension last winter, says front office needs to make adjustments "to be in a better position to win."
2/20/24 Rafael Devers Spoke to Red Sox About Roster Additions: 'Everybody Knows What We Need'. Rafael Devers pretty clear that he thinks the Red Sox need to keep adding. Simply put, the Red Sox did very little this offseason after finishing last in the AL East with a 78-84 record. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow stated in November that "there's a need for a bona fide starter or two." The Red Sox did land starter Lucas Giolito in a two-year deal, but there's serious questions about his effectiveness after he posted a 7.13 ERA in his final 14 starts in 2023.
2/02/24 Red Sox third base outlook: Devers' defense must improve in 2024. Rafael Devers is the least of Boston's worries for 2024, but there's no doubt his defense needs to improve. We assess the third base position for next season.
