5/04/26 [Last Word on Sports] - Padres Offense Finds Spark in Unusual Place. The majority of this past offseason involved the San Diego Padres sitting back while other teams snatched up all the top free agents available. The Friars simply did not have the payroll flexibility to make competitive offers to the stars (or their own players) in free agency. Then came the signing of . It was the second-largest offensive signing of the Friars’ season behind international agent . Andujar was signed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the club. That contract came out of a hope that Andujar could act in a platoon role off the bench. He’s been traditionally known as a bench bat with better career splits versus left-handed pitching. The Padres needed some after not having a solution when facing them last season. Enter Andujar. The Saga of Miguel Andujar It’s easy to forget (had it not been for a little-known guy named ) that Andujar nearly won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2018 with the New York Yankees. He had a ridiculous .297/.328/.527 slash line. Andujar also slugged a career-high 27 homers that season. The problem was that he couldn’t replicate it in his . Since then, he hasn’t had a season with more than 10 home runs, and he hit no higher than .253 over the next five seasons. 2018 was also Andujar’s only full season at the major-league level (573 at-bats). His highest over that same time frame was 154 ABs. But then came 2024. The journeyman batter was picked up by the then-Oakland Athletics and picked up some steam. Andujar hit .285/.320/.377 with four home runs. Sure, the OPS was low (.697), but it was an encouraging turnaround for Andujar. There was hope that it would continue. And it did. Andujar put together a .318/.352/.470 slash line in 2025 with the Athletics before being . The OPS also improved to a .822 mark as Andujar also reached double digits in home runs (10) for the first time since 2018. The hope for San Diego, then, was that Andujar would continue to piece it together with them as a valuable bench piece. Starting with a , that bet has paid off splendidly thus far. Hot Streak Continues in Bench Role Miguel Andujar is off to a .316/.349/.443 slash line to start 2026 with a .759 OPS. But, recently, he’s been the best hitter on the Padres. In his last seven games, Andujar has batted .333/.357/.630 with two homers and seven RBI. That kind of line has inspired an increase in confidence in Andujar’s bat. He’s played in 23 of the 33 games played so far this season. Andujar hasn’t seen that level of playing time since his rookie year in 2018. He’s smoked two home runs in the last week, and he seems poised to return to the slug that once defined his rookie season. If he did, that would be a major step forward for the San Diego offense. Gettin’ Miggy Wit It — San Diego Padres (@Padres) With the hot-hitting (and great defense) of also on that bench, as well as and , it’s a crowded but talented bench in San Diego. The ceiling is high for the group, and it seems like the bets the Friars made have paid off so far. Since it seems that when more players return, Andujar’s spot on the roster is safe for the moment. The Padres are obviously not expecting him to continue to produce at this level, but it’s a wonderful and welcome development for the club nonetheless. Whether or not Miguel Andujar continues to rake for San Diego remains to be seen. It’s certainly a hopeful start to the year through the first 30-plus games. But Andujar has seemed to return to his hot-hitting ways in recent years. If he can continue to do so with the Friars, he’ll set himself up for an even bigger payday in free agency for 2027.
