Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free While Jeff McNeil works his way back from the oblique strain suffered during spring training, the Mets continue to search for offense from second base. Both Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuña have disappointed at the plate in McNeil's absence. Instead of forming a decent lefty-righty platoon for Carlos Mendoza, the young duo has mostly flailed at the plate. The Mets entered Monday's game against the Marlins with the worst OPS among second basemen in the majors (.306), and the two have combined to go 4-for-35 with

4/04/25 Reese Kaplan -- Sometimes You Have Too Much of a Good Thing. In the recent comments an in some article profiles the topic has arisen more than once about the Mets' plethora of infielders and how they will likely use them as trade chips moving forward. Jeff McNeil is the most obvious name on the list for the Mets to try to parlay into something else. Already called out by Francisco Lindor for his less than stellar effort, the young speedster Luisangel Acuna who usually displays sharp defense is one of those roll the dice type of candidates. Given his biological pedigree, his minor league accomplishments and his blazing baserunning he is sure to be of interest to most clubs, particularly ones who do not often spend a lot on player salaries (ahem, Miami).

Try it free HOUSTON — Jeff McNeil is swinging a bat in the early stages of his comeback from a right oblique strain. The Mets second baseman, according to manager Carlos Mendoza, began hitting off a tee on Friday with a goal of soon progressing to soft toss. 3/24/25 Reese Kaplan -- "What's on Second?" Brett Baty!. Over this past weekend news broke that Jeff McNeil's oblique strain turns out to be a bit more severe than originally thought. While no one really gave much thought to a week or two on the IL while either Brett Baty and his hot bat took over for the former batting champion or Luisangel Acuna with his solid defense and blazing speed would substitute for the former All Star would be that big a deal for 10-14 days. With newcomer Nick Madrigal gone for the entire year due to his own injury and prospect Ronny Mauricio also not yet ready to play every day it leads the Mets back to where we started with Baty and Acuna.
