1/23/25 Willson Contreras embraces move to first base, feels ‘need’ to stick with Cardinals. After nearly a decade of MLB experience behind the plate, Willson Contreras is set to trade his catcher's gear for a first baseman's glove this season.

12/18/24 Yankees Could Save On Pete Alonso By Signing Ex-Cardinals $130 Million Fan Favorite. The St. Louis Cardinals have a solid foundation of first basemen, with three-time All-Star Willson Contreras projected to be the Opening Day starter at the position. Despite the Cardinals' rebuilding this offseason, Contreras invoked his no-trade clause and elected to remain with St. Louis, hoping to help the club stay competitive in 2025. With first base locked down for the Cardinals, re-signing a fan favorite wouldn't make sense. "By adding (Cody) Bellinger's $27.5 million salary in 2025 (of which the (Chicago) Cubs will cover $2.5 million), the Yankees might look at lower-cost alternatives than Christian Walker or Pete Alonso, with other first basemen including Carlos Santana and Paul Goldschmidt among their potential free-agent targets," MLB.com's Mark Feinsand wrote Friday when discussing who the Yankees will sign after declining former Chicago Cubs superstar Anthony Rizzo's 2025 club option.

11/29/24 Padres Suggested As Potential Option For Cardinals' 8-Time All-Star. Who will be playing the infield for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2025? St. Louis already announced that Willson Contreras will take over the first base spot from Paul Goldschmidt. The Cardinals are set at shortstop for the foreseeable future with 22-year-old Masyn Winn manning the spot. The second base and third base positions are question marks right now.

11/27/24 Cardinals Would Be Wise To Consider Deal With Yankees Two-Time All-Star. There's a chance that the St. Louis Cardinals don't make as many big subtractions to the roster as initially expected. St. Louis already has made one big announcement by saying that Willson Contreras will be the team's first baseman in 2025. This essentially closes the door on a return of Paul Goldschmidt and hints that Contreras won't be traded despite rumors. Other players who have been consistently mentioned in trade rumors are Sonny Gray, Ryan Helsley, and Nolan Arenado, to name a few.

11/19/24 Cardinals $74 Million Gold Glover Predicted To Be Traded To Astros This Winter. The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to be active in the trade market this winter as the front office looks to reduce payroll and open opportunities for the club's young talent core. Following three-time All-Star Willson Contreras and ace Sonny Gray's decisions to invoke their no-trade clause for 2025, the Cardinals aren't left with many options to decrease payroll significantly. Fortunately for Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.'s wallet, a St. Louis fan favorite signed to an expensive contract remains on the trade block and the Houston Astros might be a suitor.

11/13/24 Cardinals Veteran Catcher Listed As Potential Trade Fit For Padres. The St. Louis Cardinals are set to do something they thought they never would have to do, which is embark on a rebuild of sorts. While the Cardinals have already announced that Willson Contreras will move to first base after he expressed a desire to stay in St. Louis, a trade can't fully be ruled out just yet. Will Leitch of MLB.com listed the San Diego Padres as a team that could potentially pony up in a trade for the now-former catcher. "If made available, Contreras would instantly become one of the best upgrades in the sport, a catcher who can rake, is better behind the plate than he's given credit for and, don't forget, a World Series champion and intense competitor," Leitch wrote.

11/13/24 Cardinals $87M Star Still Could Cut Ties With St. Louis, Per Insider. The vast majority of the chatter swirling around the St. Louis Cardinals already this offseason has been about the players the club are going to lose rather than possible additions. St. Louis clearly will be making changes and isn't in the same position as it was last year. The Cardinals were aggressive in free agency last year and were one of the first teams to add starting pitching help right when free agency opened up. There has been plenty of speculation about who could be on the move, but one player who seemed like a given to stay is All-Star slugger Willson Contreras.

11/12/24 Cardinals slugger listed as possible trade chip as rebuild begins. The St. Louis Cardinals are about to enter a rebuild phase. Both Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray have already used their no-trade clauses to stay in St. Louis, but other players could still be shipped out. One such player is third baseman Nolan Arenado. Jim Bowden of The Athletic lists Arenado as one of the top trade chips in all of Major League Baseball this offseason and argues that St. Louis should trade him to a contender.

11/05/24 Cubs eyeing 2022 All-Star with double-digit homer pop. The Chicago Cubs' catching position has been in flux since Willson Contreras signed a free-agent deal with the rival St. Louis Cardinals following the 2022 season. Since then, the Cubs have had a revolving door behind the plate featuring the youthful Miguel Amaya, supplanted by veterans such as Yan Gomes and Christian Bethancourt. While the grouping has excelled in spurts, none have provided the steady offensive production of Contreras. Amaya, still just 25, finished the 2024 season strong, finally appearing to be on his way to providing the legitimate bat that the team could use near the bottom of its order.

11/04/24 Cardinals, Astros Trade Proposal Would Land $87M Star In Houston. The St. Louis Cardinals may end up being one of the most active teams on the trade market this winter once things start to heat up. St. Louis is widely expected to be active this offseason in the trade market as the club looks to cut costs and improve the farm system. The Cardinals have a lot of talent that could be of interest to opposing teams, and the Belleville News-Democrat's Jeff Jones floated catcher Willson Contreras as a trade candidate with the Houston Astros as a loose fit. "Each of Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Sonny Gray will have the opportunity to be shopped and shipped if they desire it," Jones said.

10/07/24 Cardinals catcher linked to Tigers in potential trade as offseason looms. After several years of rebuilding, the Detroit Tigers have emerged as a legitimate contender once again. Josh Jacobs of FanSided listed Detroit as a possible fit for Willson Contreras in the event that the St. Louis Cardinals trade him as part of their upcoming rebuild. Detroit already has Jake Rogers as their starting catcher, but it wouldn't hurt for them to add an extra bat to their mix and even hand the reins over to Contreras if he is acquired.

10/04/24 Giants Reportedly Could Be 'Intriguing Fit' For Cardinals $130 Million Star. The St. Louis Cardinals have put their World Series aspirations on hold for the moment as the organization strategizes how to fix the failing farm system. Several notable players, such as Willson Contreras and Nolan Arenado, came to St. Louis in hopes of winning it all, but sadly, the window for that to happen seems to be closed. Another star who joined the Cardinals to bring a twelfth World Series title back to St. Louis will not be re-signed this winter and could land with a National League West foe. "The (San Francisco) Giants need an everyday first baseman and someone who can provide support in the middle of the order alongside (Matt) Chapman," Bleacher Report's Joe Tansey wrote Thursday.

8/27/24 Cardinals' Willson Contreras gets updated injury timeline. The St. Louis Cardinals lost catcher Willson Contreras to a fractured finger when he was hit with a 95 mph four-seam fastball from the Minnesota Twins' Pablo Lopez. The pitch tailed inside and caught Contreras on the right middle finger. Now the Cardinals expect to be without their catcher for at least three weeks, according to St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol, per an MLB.com team report.

8/27/24 Cardinals hope to get Contreras back this season. St. Louis Cardinals veteran catcher Willson Contreras, on the injured list for the second time this season after he broke a finger when he was hit by a pitch last week, will miss three weeks of action, manager Oliver Marmol said on Monday night.

8/26/24 Cardinals Make Surprise Choice With All-Star Injured, Per Insider. The St. Louis Cardinals recently got some bad news. St. Louis currently has a 65-65 record and is five games out of a National League Wild Card spot. The Cardinals need a lot to go right down the stretch if they want to steal a playoff spot but now they will be without the services of one of their top sluggers. Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras broke a finger after being hit on the hand with a pitch on Saturday.

8/25/24 Broken finger will sideline Cardinals' Contreras. St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras is headed to the injured list for the second time this year, after, in a game in which he was the Cardinals' designated hitter, he broke a finger when he was hit by a pitch in Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
