The Chicago White Sox are expected to sign former Stanford Cardinal legend Austin Slater to a big-league deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Slater was originally selected in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, and up until the 2024 season, that had been the only organization he'd been for the past decade. The 31-year-old made his MLB debut in 2017, but wasn't really a regular with the club until the 2021 campaign. 2021 was also Slater's best overall season, where he hit .241 with a .320 OBP and racked up 1.4 bWAR and a 101 OPS+. Terms were not reported for the 31-year-old veteran, who split the 2024 season between the San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. He hit a combined .209 with two homers and 18 RBIs in 84 games. Slater is a career .252 hitter with 40 home runs, 171 RBIs and 48 stolen bases in 634 games with the Giants (2017-24), Reds and Orioles. The White Sox are coming off a 121-loss campaign, a dubious record for the modern era. The White Sox will sign free agent outfielder Austin Slater to a major league contract, according to a report by the New York Post's Jon Heyman. Terms of the deal were not known. The right-handed Slater, 31, had a slash line of .209/.321/.266 in 84 games with the Giants, Reds and Orioles last season. The San Francisco Giants may have a sub .500 record at 44-47, but they are still in the thick of the National League wild card race, as they sit just 3.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the third and final spot. If the Giants are going to make it to the playoffs, though, they are going to need to fix their roster up a bit, which led to them pulling off a trade that will see them reunite with a former reliever of theirs.
