2/01/24 Reliever Hector Neris and Chicago Cubs finalize $9 million, 1-year contract. The 34-year-old right-hander gets a $9 million salary this year, and the agreement includes a $9 million team option for 2025. The option would become a player option if Neris pitches in 60 games this season or finishes 45, is not on the injured list for the final game of the season and does not have a significant injury. Neris went 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA in 71 games with Houston last season. Neris likely will slot in as one of Chicago's primary setup men for Adbert Alzolay, who had 22 saves in 25 chances in 2023 in his first season as the closer.

12/19/23 BCB After Dark: Where goes Belli?. BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. Last night I asked you if you thought that Adbert Alzolay would record 30 saves for the Cubs in 2024. I don't know if you are worried about Alzolay's health, think the Cubs are going to land a major closer or you are all just in a bad mood, but 61 percent of you thought that Alzolay would fall short of 30 saves. Just a reminder that you still have time to vote in the BCB Winter Western Classic between True Grit (1969) and My Darling Clementine (1946).

11/03/23 Adbert Alzolay Example Of What Craig Breslow Could Do With Red Sox. On the surface, Craig Breslow's introductory Red Sox press conference Thursday at Fenway Park was one filled with corporate buzzwords like “synthesizing” and being “directionally aligned.” Breslow unsurprisingly kept details close to the vest, but just because he has an Ivy League vocabulary doesn't mean he can't communicate in a way that baseball players and coaches can understand. In fact, it's his demonstrated ability to do that with the Cubs that helped earn him his first job in a big chair. The Red Sox obviously hope Breslow, who oversaw pitching in Chicago, can turn around Boston the way he did the Cubs on the mound.

9/13/23 Chicago Cubs bullpen faces a major test without Adbert Alzolay. At a crucial moment in the season where the Chicago Cubs need as many wins as possible to stave off their scorching hot playoff rivals, they'll be without one of their biggest weapons in the bullpen. It was reported yesterday that Adbert Alzolay was going on the injured list and almost immediately, the relief corps was tested in Colorado. The Cubs blew a 3-1 lead to the Rockies after Jose Cuas entered the game and once again faced danger when Michael Fulmer couldn't find the strike zone in the ninth. This group, specifically the core four of Alzolay, Fulmer, Julian Merryweather, and Mark Leiter Jr., has been worked to the bone.
