1/23/24 Will Tigers finally find stability at catcher?. Have the Detroit Tigers finally found their catcher of the present and catcher of the future? Jake Rogers, after missing a season-and-a-half due to Tommy John surgery , slugged 21 home runs for the Tigers in 2023. He took over regular catching duties after Eric Haase struggled mightily at the plate and then was let go in August . Veteran Carson Kelly was brought in as the new backup , but Rogers has a clear path to the No. 1 job in 2024. It would be the first time the Tigers have had a true primary catcher in consecutive years since James McCann caught the most games in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. 11/30/23 As the Tigers hunt pitchers, is there any work left to do on the lineup?. Assembling a list of free-agent pitchers who might help the Detroit Tigers in 2024 was easy. If the season started today, 11 position players would likely have jobs: Catchers Jake Rogers and Carson Kelly; outfielders Mark Canha, Riley Greene, Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter; first baseman Spencer Torkelson; shortstop Javier Baez; and utility players Matt Vierling, Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez.
10/26/23 How Detroit Tigers' Jake Rogers became 'what everybody is looking for' at catcher position. Detroit Tigers' Jake Rogers cleaned up his glove work, topped 20 home runs on offense and established himself as a top catcher in the big leagues.
10/04/23 Tigers still mulling catching option for 2024. One of the happiest stories to emerge out of the Detroit Tigers' 2023 season was the emergence of Jake Rogers as a solid No. 1 catcher. Rogers' emergence unfortunately coincided with the offensive collapse of Eric Haase, a hometown hero and one of the Tigers's top hitters in 2021 and 2022. Haase hit 36 home runs and had a .746 OPS (108 OPS+) in the two preceding seasons, but could never got on track in 2023. Haase's replacement -- veteran Carson Kelly -- hasn't hit especially well either, albeit in a very limited sample size.
9/18/23 Detroit Tigers Newsletter: Jake Rogers about to join an exclusive club of catchers. Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers is close to matching Lance Parrish and Bill Freehan, among others, with an elusive power feat.
