The Detroit Tigers parted ways with infielders Nick Maton and Tyler Nevin; moved Justyn-Henry Malloy to the outfield on a full-time basis; and declared a fairly open competition for the final bench spot leading up to spring training. All that seemed like great news for the four Tigers' infielders on the 40-man roster who would be otherwise slated for a return engagement at Triple-A Toledo: Ryan Kreidler, Andre Lipcius, Wenceel Perez and Eddys Leonard.

2/07/24 Detroit Tigers Links: Nick Maton DFA'd as roster churn shenanigans continue. Monday afternoon, the Tigers announced that infielder Nick Maton has been designed for assignment. After being acquired from Philly in the deal for flame-throwing reliever Gregory Soto, Maton was expected to be a useful utility piece, if not an everyday infielder. The future looked bright, but instead, he hit .173/.288/.305 and, over the course of 93 games, was actively harmful to Detroit's winning chances. Despite how poorly he showed last season, Maton could still hold some appeal for a team in need of infield depth or who hope to sneak him through waivers themselves.
