1/15/24 Washington Nationals news & notes: New rules; adjustments + more…. Davey Martinez's club stole 75 bases total in 2022, 20th most amongst 30 MLB teams, but with a few more players who could run on the roster in 2023, and new rules in place which encouraged running more and stealing more bases, the Nationals' manager said an increase in attempts was something he and his staff were focused on. Martinez's club stole 127 bases in 2023, 12th most in the majors, with CJ Abrams leading the way. “Abrams,” the club noted in their Season in Review, “… ranked fifth in Major League Baseball (3rd in the NL) with 47 stolen bases, the most in a single-season in Nationals' history (2005-[present]).” “[Abrams] broke Trea Turner's 2017 record on the final day of the season with two stolen bases against the Atlanta Braves,” the Nationals noted, and when Jacob Young stole the 124th of their 127 total bases on the year, the '23 Nats had the, “... most [stolen bases] in a single-season in Nationals' history (2005-pres.).”
11/12/23 Washington Nationals news & notes: CJ Abrams & sneaky pop. CJ Abrams hit his first grand slam in April of this past season, hit his first leadoff home run in August, and put together his first two-home run game in September. Abrams' 18 home runs on the year were four more than he'd hit in three pro seasons' worth of at-bats before last year.
10/29/23 Washington Nationals news & notes: Nats in 2024 + more.... Once the 2023 Trade Deadline passed this past August 1st (at 6:00 PM ET), it was time to get back to work for Davey Martinez and his club. You got traded to the Washington Nationals, so congratulations. The morning after the '23 deadline, GM Mike Rizzo talked with 106.7 the FAN in D.C.'s Sports Junkies about the club's goals for the 2024 campaign after the club, in his opinion, made real strides in terms of developing their young core in the majors and minors this season. “We got a lot of good young guys,” the Nats' skipper said, pointing to the way CJ Abrams, Lane Thomas, Keibert Ruiz, Riley Adams and others improved this year, and Martinez said the next wave Nats in the system have him excited too.
10/22/23 Washington Nationals news & notes: CJ Abrams sets franchise single season stolen base record…. Abrams' manager, Davey Martinez, was asked after the regular season finale if the shortstop was aware of the record going into Game 162 of 162. “There's no doubt about it,” Martinez told reporters, though he said he thought for a moment Abrams' got picked off trying to get to the franchise record-setting mark when reliever Joe Jimènez threw over twice in a row after Abrams' RBI single tied things up at 7-7 in the eighth inning of the game.
10/02/23 Nationals Notebook: Nats finish a season of progress. Other pieces for a future contending team saw their first full seasons in D.C. from CJ Abrams and his 47 steals to MacKenzie Gore and his 151 strikeouts. The lineup that produced the 12th best batting average in MLB produced the 10th fewest runs scored, while the pitching staff allowed the most home runs (245) in the big leagues while posting the fourth-highest ERA.
