As first reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the New York Mets have agreed to a minor league deal with infielder David Villar. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment a couple of weeks ago after the Giants activated Casey Schmitt from the injured list. Once heralded as the Giants' third baseman of the future, David Villar's time with the organization is likely coming to an end. Villar, 28, was designated for assignment Monday for the second time this season so that Casey Schmitt could be activated from the injured list. If he is not traded, Villar will have the opportunity to elect free agency rather than an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. Not only had Villar been designated for assignment weeks earlier, San Francisco had gone the first three-plus weeks of the regular season without calling down once to Triple-A Sacramento for reinforcements.
