Author: Maren Angus-Coombs Publish date: Feb 19, 2024 1:30 PM EST In this story: Los Angeles Dodgers Saying Miguel Vargas struggled last season would be an understatement. The former top prospect hit .310 in the minor leagues, and was given the starting job at second base out of Spring Training. But he struggled to keep his batting average above .200 in what amounted to a three-month audition. “I never struggled with my hitting before. Obviously everybody has good years and bad years but it had never happened to me before. It was kind of new for me.” Miguel Vargas via O.C. Register By
2/18/24 Dodgers' Miguel Vargas trying to find his way back after bad year. Miguel Vargas experienced something for the first time last year – failure. “I never struggled with my hitting before,” said Vargas, the Dodgers' top prospect going into spring training a year ago. Vargas struggled mightily, batting just .195 with a .672 OPS after batting .310 as a minor-leaguer and earning high marks for his 'hit tool.' Handed the job as the starting second baseman in spring training, he had it taken away at the All-Star break when the Dodgers sent him back to Triple-A. He spent the rest of the year there.
2/14/24 Dodgers Spring Training: Miguel Vargas Reported To Camp As Left Fielder. Among them was Miguel Vargas, who was the Dodgers' Opening Day second baseman last season. A highly touted Dodgers prospect heading into the 2023 season, Vargas dealt with multiple injuries in the early going and struggled to find a rhythm at the plate and with learning a new position. Vargas hit .195/.305/.367 through 256 plate appearances and was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in July.
2/12/24 Andrew Friedman: Dodgers 'Really Encouraged' With Miguel Vargas. Miguel Vargas opened the 2023 season as the Los Angeles Dodgers' everyday second baseman, but multiple injuries and inconsistencies at the plate led to a demotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City in July. Vargas' struggles began in Spring Training when he fractured his left pinky finger and was unable to swing a bat for a brief stretch. Vargas hit just .195/.305/.367 with 15 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 32 RBI in 304 plate appearances (81 games) before he was sent to OKC for the remainder of the season.
1/21/24 Dodgers 'Still Believe' In Miguel Vargas After Poor 2023 Season. Miguel Vargas was originally tabbed as the Los Angeles Dodgers' everyday option at second base last season, but a few injuries and inconsistent play forced the front office's hand in optioning him to Triple-A. Vargas struggled offensively in his first extended taste of the Majors last season, but the Dodgers still believe the former top prospect can be a key contributor at the big league level.
