2/16/24 Mariners' Logan Gilbert didn't add any pitches this offseason, but he's improved the ones he throws. Two years ago, he decided to overhaul his slider, changing the shape and speed after it became evident it wasn't a viable pitch at the major-league level. Last offseason, following the lead of former teammate Robbie Ray, he decided to bring in a split-finger fastball to add a unique pitch that could operate almost like a changeup against left-handed hitters. “He's disciplined,” manager Scott Servais said. “When I think about Logan Gilbert, I think discipline.”

For the fifth time in his career, Robbie Ray has a new team. “Because not only did I get Tommy John but I got flexor tendon surgery as well, so I got a full reconstruction,” Ray said Friday, introduced over Zoom three weeks after the San Francisco Giants acquired him from the Mariners for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani. “It's been kind of a whirlwind,” Ray, 32, said.
