6/10/24 Giants notes: Melvin provides injury updates on pitchers Cobb, Ray. Giants pitcher Robbie Ray is on track in his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but Alex Cobb's path for a return is less set in stone.
6/09/24 Injured San Francisco Giants Starter Perfect In Second Rehab Outing. Robbie Ray built upon his last rehab outing for the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, throwing two innings for the Arizona Complex League Giants. This came on the heels of his first live pitches on Tuesday with the ACL Giants, where he gave up a hit and struck out three hitters. This is the final stage of Ray's recovery from Tommy John surgery for the torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, which he suffered early last season with the Seattle Mariners. The left-hander reached the apex of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, when he went 13-7 with an American League-leading 2.84 ERA and won the Cy Young award.
6/05/24 Grunting and screaming, Robbie Ray takes next step to joining SF Giants rotation. “It looked like normal Robbie Ray to me,” said Keaton Winn, offering a review of a major milestone in his rehab partner's journey back from multiple elbow surgeries. On the backfields of the Peoria Sports Complex, the 31-year-old former Cy Young winner struck out the side in one inning of work against the Mariners' rookie-level affiliate. It was his first time appearing in a game since undergoing Tommy John and flexor tendon surgeries last spring. “It's kind of the start of a process for him,” manager Bob Melvin said of Ray, who still has a number of checkpoints to hit before he is expected to debut sometime after the All-Star break.
3/12/24 Sense of optimism among SF Giants as Alex Cobb, Robbie Ray reach milestones. When Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb arrived at spring training, they each set milestones they hoped to hit in their respective rehabs by the time they began to pack up the equipment trucks for the trek north. Ray, who had multiple surgeries on his elbow, had a more modest goal — pitching off the mound — that reflected the more invasive nature of his procedures. On Monday, Cobb threw about 25 pitches in a live batting practice session at Scottsdale Stadium. Ray also threw about 25 pitches off the bullpen mound.
2/16/24 Mariners' Logan Gilbert didn't add any pitches this offseason, but he's improved the ones he throws. Two years ago, he decided to overhaul his slider, changing the shape and speed after it became evident it wasn't a viable pitch at the major-league level. Last offseason, following the lead of former teammate Robbie Ray, he decided to bring in a split-finger fastball to add a unique pitch that could operate almost like a changeup against left-handed hitters. “He's disciplined,” manager Scott Servais said. “When I think about Logan Gilbert, I think discipline.”
