On Friday, manager Torey Lovullo revealed that interim closer Shelby Miller will be receiving a second opinion on his right forearm strain from Dr. Keith Meister, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. Miller went on the 15-day Injured List on July 7 with his diagnosed right forearm strain, the latest in an agonizing stretch of injuries to the Diamondbacks' roster. On Tuesday, Miller received an MRI, but he will now look for a second opinion from one of baseball's most notorious surgeons.

The 25-year-old right-hander caught a throw from first baseman Abraham Toro before landing awkwardly on the bag to record the second out of the inning. Dobbins allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings against the Rays.

Jeremy Peña was putting together the best season of his career when he landed on the injured list with a rib fracture. Peña was hit by a pitch and forced to exit the Houston Astros' win over the Chicago Cubs on June 27. Peña is increasing his weight room work and participating “somewhat [in] baseball activities,” according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. It wasn't immediately clear what activities Peña had begun or when he'd be for full participation.

The San Diego Padres named right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert as the starter for their series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, and activated him from the 15-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the Padres optioned right-hander Eduarniel Nunez to Triple-A El Paso. Bergert landed on the IL with a right forearm contusion June 25 after a liner struck him in the fourth inning of a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals.
